Starlink & multi-source

Add a Starlink to your Insty router

Plug your Starlink into the Insty router and the system treats it as another internet source โ€” using it, prioritizing it, and failing over to cellular when the satellite drops. Here's the one-cable setup.

The short answer

Your Insty router can run more than one internet source at once. Plug your Starlink into the router with an ethernet cable, wait a minute, and it shows up on your dashboard as a source you can prioritize โ€” with cellular ready to take over automatically if the satellite drops.

What you'll need

  • Your Insty router, powered on and running normally.
  • Your Starlink (this guide is written for the Starlink Mini โ€” other models are similar).
  • One ethernet cable.

Plug it in

  1. Find the LAN 4 port on the back of your Insty router.
  2. Run an ethernet cable from the ethernet port on your Starlink to that LAN 4 port. (On the Starlink Mini the ethernet port is active out of the box โ€” nothing to enable.)
  3. Open your dashboard at http://192.168.8.1 and watch the Internet Sources list. Give it a minute or two and reload โ€” the router finds the Starlink and sets it up on its own.

Once Starlink appears in your sources, you're done.

Make it your preferred source

On the dashboard, drag Starlink to the top of Internet Sources by its โ‰ก grip so it's preferred, and tap Save. Now the system uses Starlink first and keeps cellular in reserve.

The perfect Starlink sidekickPair Starlink-on-top with a Hot-Standby cellular plan. When the dish loses sky โ€” trees, weather, moving โ€” the router fails over to cellular automatically, and Hot-Standby only charges you the days that actually happens. Automatic backup, pennies when it's idle.

Good to know

  • You can leave the Starlink Wi-Fi on, or turn it off to save a little power โ€” either way, the ethernet link to the Insty router is what carries your internet.
  • The Insty router and Starlink use separate IP ranges on the current firmware, so they coexist without the address conflicts older setups ran into. No manual network surgery needed.
  • Adding a Wi-Fi hotspot or campground Wi-Fi as *another* source works the same way, through the dashboard โ€” the router juggles all of them.

Still stuck?

If Starlink never shows up, re-seat both ends of the ethernet cable, confirm the Starlink itself is online, and give the dashboard another few minutes. Still nothing? Reach out โ€” we do this all the time.
